NOTE: This workshop can be taken live, or completed via class recordings available through the end of October to all who sign up.

This class offers a crash course in color theory in 3 sessions, uncovering the mesmerizing nature of color principals and color relativity through hands-on exercises in paint-mixing and collage interspersed with related slideshows. By the end of the workshop everyone will leave with a broader understanding and appreciation of the nuances of color, along with prompts and ideas about how to experiment with color in new ways into the future.

Open to beginners, practicing artists, and designers alike!

What is Covered:

  • The basic science of human color vision and perception, with some comparison to other animals.

  • A brief history of human’s use of pigment and paint.

  • An overview of color terminology and vocabulary, with visual examples from textiles, folk art, and contemporary artworks.

  • The nature of color relativity, uncovered by the early color theorists Johannes Itten and his student, Josef Albers.

  • Hands-on paint-mixing and collage exercises.

  • Prompts for continuing to experiment with color into the future, including how to develop palettes and color themes for different projects.

On MATERIALS: A packet with paper templates for paint mixing exercises will be shipped via postal mail to all participants ahead of the start of the workshop. If you live overseas, PDF’s of the templates will be emailed to print independently, or an additional fee will be added to cover international shipping costs.

Lena Wolff has taught color studies at Pixar Animation Studios, Kala Art Institute, Disney Animation Studios, Nike and independently in her studio in Berkeley, California for over a decade.

Workshops can’t be cancelled, but may be gifted to others or credited for future classes.

Below is the basic materials list for the class. This list will be emailed with links to purchase after signing up.

BASIC MATERIALS LIST

a set of 7 gouache tubes in primary colors + white
glue for collages: either a basic glue stick, or to make archival collages: Golden brand High Solid Gel and PVA bookbinding glue (they mix together well)
brushes for gluing (cheaper)
a roll of waxed paper
2 - 6 watercolor brushes, a few ¼ inch flat and one larger, ¾ or 1” flat
watercolor or mixed media paper about 8.5 x 11 inches- card stock, bristol board or watercolor paper (smooth or cold press) can work
lightweight paper for collage that is suitable for water media: Beinfangs graphics paper or lightweight (90lb) watercolor paper
small paper scissors
removable tape (Scotch brand)
