REPAIR SHOP

a new center for art, craft and social engagement

-founded by Miriam Klein Stahl and Lena Wolff 
in collaboration with Tammy Rae Carland and Lauren Schiller

Now is the time for artists to do what we have always done, to fill the gaps with unexpected life.

REPAIR SHOP is a one-room schoolhouse, collective art studio, workshop and public gathering space founded by women with deep and longstanding ties to the arts ecosystem and Queer culture of the San Francisco Bay Area.

Amidst the environment of the recent closures of key universities and non-profit organizations that supported the arts and humanities in our region, REPAIR SHOP is being established in response, guided by the ethos and mission of repair through art, the development of craft, and intergenerational, creative social interaction.

Running as a social-profit organization, the center will serve local artists, young people, elders, and the general public alike, offering:

• Shared studio space for the development of new work and collaborations

• Hands-on workshops for youth and adults that provide the mutual benefit of high-quality art classes in the Bay Area and a revenue stream for local artists who have lost their teaching jobs

• Free to low-cost art programming for youth, including once a month Friday “teen nights” designed by young adult participants

• A range of public events that center art and social engagement including book releases, readings, salons, artist conversations, temporary exhibitions, craft nights, sewing circles, dance parties, comedy nights and action-oriented gatherings focused on civic participation.

Miriam Klein Stahl is an artist, educator, activist and the New York Times-bestselling illustrator of Rad American Women A-Z and Rad Women Worldwide. In addition to her work in printmaking, drawing, sculpture, paper-cut and public art, she is also the co-founder of the Arts and Humanities Academy at Berkeley High School where she’s taught since 1995. As an artist, she follows in traditions of making socially relevant work, creating portraits of political activists, misfits, radicals and radical movements. As an educator, she has dedicated her teaching practice to address equity through the lens of the arts. Her work has been widely exhibited in local and national exhibitions, including shows at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Oakland Museum of California, the Smithsonian, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, among others.

Tammy Rae Carland is an artist, educator, and academic leader with more than three decades of service to nonprofit higher education in the arts. She spent twenty-four years at California College of the Arts including nine years as Provost where she played a key role in shaping institutional vision, supporting faculty and students, and advancing inclusive, interdisciplinary arts education. Working across photography, film, video, sculpture, collage, and publications, her work has been exhibited and screened internationally, most recently at the Museu de Arte de São Paulo and the Brooklyn Museum. Carland was instrumental in the formation of the third-wave feminist Riot Grrrl movement in Olympia, Washington and her work has been widely recognized in major publications such as The New York Times, Artforum, Art in America, and TIME.

Lauren Schiller is a strategist, author, producer, artist, and live event moderator whose work is fueled by the power of stories and shared experiences to spark curiosity, create connections and catalyze change. Lauren moderates live events at venues like City Arts & Lectures, JCCSF, and The Commonwealth Club. Her groundbreaking, nationally syndicated show Inflection Point ran for 10 years and was the first podcast to exclusively feature conversations with women about how they build power and lead change. It led to her book It’s a Good Day to Change the World, a Gracie Award from the Alliance for Women in Media, and a home in the American Archive of Public Broadcasting at the Library of Congress. Before that, she co-created one of the world’s first female-led podcasts, ran audio at Salon Media; and guest hosted on the BBC World Service.
