Bay Area woodworker, craftsman and builder Nobuto Suga created sixteen modular isosceles benches made in response to the 8-pointed star quilt pattern I often work with in drawing, collage and sculpture. This project was one of several collaborations generated as part of my 2017 residency at the de Young Museum, The Song is Love. When re-positioned, the benches configure into near infinite arrangement of forms, including the precise 8-pointed star when all sixteen are joined in one way. Both the benches and table were made by Suga from a single Cypress tree, an iconic tree found in Golden Gate Park and and along the coast of Northern California.
